The 15th Texas
Cavalry Regiment

We're the 15th Texas Cavalry! We portray a dismounted cavalry, meaning all of the weapons, uniforms, and regulations of a cavalry group, but no horses. Our members also portray the 2nd US Cavalry, so we're a versatile bunch of reenactors. Our combat style during reenactments is very free-form skirmish style, so if you’re not afraid to run, squat, and fire at will, we'd love to have you!

The Beginning of the American Civil War

The 15th Texas Cavalry regiment was officially organized near Dallas, TX on march 10, 1862, with about 1,000 men. Former newspaperman and veteran of Hood's Texas Brigade, George H. Sweet was instrumental in organizing the regiment and was elected as its first Colonel. The regiment trained near Clarksville, TX, and was composed of eight companies (A-H).

In May, 1862, the 15th Texas was based in Little Rock (AR) along with several other Texas cavalry regiments. Their first fighting engagement was along the Black River, near Batesville, AR on July 8, 1862. In this battle, they suffered 8 killed and 7 wounded.
